What it does, and what it won’t.
What it does
- Asks you exam questions from your own material, in writing, with no microphone and nobody to book — and follows up.
- Searches your knowledge base on your device. Your notes and your documents are not uploaded to a server for storage.
- Writes every answer in the first person, from what you uploaded, with the file and page it came from. Where your material is silent, it says so rather than filling the gap.2
- Listens to the sound on your own computer in the conversations where it is permitted. It joins nothing and appears in no participant list.
- Stays out of your screen share: excluded from capture on Windows, hidden from single-window shares on macOS.3
- Deletes the transcript after the conversation. Audio is never stored. What remains is the debrief.
What it won’t do
- Work in a graded examination. Where an exam or an assessment does not permit aids, using Thalassa is not permitted either. That is in the terms (section 2), not just here — this is a tool for the work before the exam, and for the conversations that are not exams.
- Give you a grade. The debrief says what carried and what slipped; it does not pretend to be your examiner’s verdict.
- Tell you something your material does not support. An answer you cannot defend is worse in a viva than an honest gap.
- Hear a phone held to your ear. By default it hears only what comes out of your speakers — a video call, or a phone call routed through the machine. The microphone stays off until you switch it on yourself.
- 2Web research is a switch you set per briefing, and it is off unless you turn it on. Every point it brings back is marked [Web] with the date it was retrieved. Your own documents are searched first; the internet is a fallback, not the default.
- 3On Windows the window is excluded from window shares, full-screen shares and screenshots alike. On macOS it is excluded when you share a window or a single application. For a full-screen share on macOS 15.4 and newer it cannot be assured: Apple withdrew the interface this relies on. The app checks your machine and tells you which of the three it can exclude, rather than letting you find out mid-call.
FAQ
The questions students ask first.
Am I allowed to use this in an exam?
In a graded examination, as a rule, no. Universities set the rules for their examinations, and keeping to them is your responsibility — where an exam or an assessment does not permit aids, using Thalassa is not permitted either, and that is in the terms (section 2), not just here. The product is built for the preparation: rehearsal mode before the exam, and the conversations in which assistance is allowed — an admissions interview, a working-student interview, a meeting with a supervisor. An answer you could not have given yourself is not one you would want to defend in a viva anyway.
How do I prove that I am a student?
With a university e-mail address. Enter it in the box above the student rates. You confirm the address before buying, with a code sent to that mailbox. The confirmation is valid for one year; after that, a new code is all it takes. Without a verified university address the checkout declines the student rates — which is why the box stands before the buttons and not after them.
Do I have to choose between the exam and the job interview?
No. The student plan is cheaper on minutes — 300 a month — not on topics. Examination, admissions interview, job interview and coding interview are all included; you pick the type in the app when you prepare. Only the One-Go ticket covers a single conversation type, chosen in the app for that one meeting.
Does Thalassa join my call?
No. It is not a meeting bot: it listens to the sound on your own computer, joins nothing and appears in no participant list — on Zoom, Teams, Meet, Webex or a phone call on speaker. Rehearsal mode needs no call at all: it asks in writing, on your own machine.
Do my notes leave my computer?
Your knowledge base is searched on your own device. Documents are not uploaded to a server for storage, audio is never stored — it is streamed for transcription and discarded — and the transcript of a session is deleted afterwards. What remains is the debrief you asked for. How your data is handled.
Do I need a microphone for rehearsal mode?
No. Rehearsal mode reads your material and asks in writing; you answer typed or spoken, as you prefer. The microphone is only needed when a real conversation happens in the same room and does not run through your computer — and it stays off until you switch it on yourself.
Does it work with handwritten or scanned notes?
Scanned pages work. Handwriting depends on how legible the scan is — if you can read it on screen, it usually can too. Half-finished notes and a scanned chapter count as much as a clean PDF; the point is coverage of your material, not a tidy archive.
Is there really a free first meeting?
Yes. Install the app and create an account — the first meeting is free, with up to 15 minutes of live answers, plus 5 preparations (briefing, debriefing or scenario workshop), knowledge base capped at about 100 pages. A preparation does not use up the free meeting. It is granted in the app, once per account; no card required.
