Your lecture notes, asking you the questions.

Upload the manuscript, the slide decks, the reading list and last year's past papers. From that point on the material is not something you read — it is something that examines you. Practice mode asks the uncomfortable questions before anyone else does, and tells you afterwards what you actually knew rather than what you recognised.

The assistant window in practice mode — a defence question, then a question arriving in another language.

Manuscripts, slides, your own summaries, the reading list, the seminar paper you handed in, last year's past papers. Whatever you put in is what you get asked about — which is the difference between practising your course and practising a generic question bank that happens to share a title with it. The knowledge base is searched on your own machine, so a manuscript your chair has not published stays where it is. And it does not need to be tidy: half-finished notes and a scanned chapter work as well as a clean PDF, because the point is coverage of your material, not a well-kept archive.
Practice mode plays the examiner and follows up. Anyone can rehearse the answer they prepared; what decides an oral exam is the question that comes after it, and that is the one nobody practises alone. There is a dedicated mode for oral examinations and subject discussions, and it needs no microphone and no partner — it runs on your own machine at three in the morning if that is when you study. Run the same topic three times and it will not repeat itself out of politeness; it goes where you were weakest last time.
Afterwards you get told where you were precise, where you talked around the thing, and which term you used without being able to define it. That is more useful than a percentage, because a percentage tells you how much you do not know and a debrief tells you which three places to spend tomorrow morning on. It also catches the failure mode nobody notices in silent revision: you recognise the material when you read it and cannot produce it when asked.

Beyond the exam

Presentations, vivas, and the conversations that decide things.

A defence, a seminar presentation, a conversation with a supervisor whose field is next to yours rather than in it, a first interview for a working-student position. The same material, the same modes, the same window — what changes is who is asking. Students tend to find their own uses for it faster than a page like this can list them.
Answers come in the language of the conversation. If your material is in German and the seminar runs in English, that is the normal case rather than the exception, and you do not have to translate under time pressure while also thinking about the content. What arrives is a sentence you can say, not a rough translation you have to repair out loud.
Practice mode needs no microphone. It reads your material and asks in writing, so there is nothing to arrange and nobody to book. The microphone is only needed when a conversation happens in the same room and does not run through your computer — and it stays off until you switch it on yourself. Student rates need a university e-mail address, verified once, with nothing to renew each term.
It will not tell you something your material does not support, and where the material is silent it says so rather than filling the gap — an answer you cannot defend is worse in a viva than an honest gap. And where an examination or assessment does not permit aids, using it is not permitted either. That is in the terms, and it is not decoration: this is a tool for the work before the exam, and for the conversations that are not exams.
Common questions

Studying — answered.

How do I get the student rate?

With a university e-mail address. It is verified once; there is nothing to renew every term. See pricing.

Do my notes leave my computer?

Your knowledge base is searched on your own device. Documents are not uploaded to a server for storage, and the transcript of a session is deleted afterwards. How your data is handled.

Can I use it in an oral exam?

Only where the examination permits aids. Where it does not, using it is not permitted — and that is a rule of the examination, not of this page.

Does it work with handwritten or scanned notes?

Scanned pages work. Handwriting depends on how legible the scan is — if you can read it on screen, it usually can too.

Upload the manuscript. Let it ask.

The first practice round takes less time than reading the chapter again.
